Back in Anhui, L wanted to know why rural communities have always had to shoulder the burden of political, social and economic change in China.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandfather had high blood pressure and had to take various medications for diseases of the elderly,\u201d L said. \u201cIt cost 800-900 yuan a month, adding up to around 10,000 yuan a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat cost was astronomical for him, an old man living alone in the countryside.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEver since the [People\u2019s Republic of China] was founded in 1949, it has always been the rural areas and farming communities who have made the biggest sacrifices, including through the [post-1979] economic reforms,\u201d L said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have always had inadequate education, medical care and pensions \u2026 This is a huge segment of the population, and yet [those in power] can\u2019t tell that they are suffering, or they don\u2019t know why?\u201d<\/p>\n
