2020, when COVID-19 upended the global economy, last year\u2019s economic growth rate was the lowest since 1976, the last year of Mao Zedong\u2019s cultural revolution.<br>Although China\u2019s economy appears to be rebounding strongly from the pandemic \u2014 manufacturing activity in February, for example, smashed expectations, expanding at the fastest pace in more than a decade \u2014 Chinese officials have warned of risks ahead.<br>While acknowledging China\u2019s \u201cvast potential and momentum for further growth,\u201d Li pointed to the rise of \u201cuncertainties in the external environment,\u201d including high inflation, and \u201cexternal attempts to suppress and contain China\u201d \u2014 a thinly-veiled reference to the country\u2019s heated geopolitical competition with the US.<br>China\u2019s economy faces serious long-term challenges domestically, too, including an enormous housing bubble and a shrinking working population due to a rock-bottom birth rate.<br>Many economists believe that China\u2019s high-growth era \u2014 characterised by decades of double-digit expansion each year \u2014 is now in the
