\u201cThey were portraying the indigenous people of Xinjiang as immigrants and Islam as a religion that was foreign to the region,\u201d Jazexhi said. \u201cIt was incorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His disillusion only continued when he and other journalists were taken by their Chinese hosts to one of the so-called vocational training centres outside the regional capital of Urumqi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey said it was like a school but it was clearly a high-security site in the middle in the desert,\u201d Jazexhi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey also told us that the people staying there were not allowed to leave so it was obviously not a school but a prison and the people there were not students but prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once they entered the site, Jazexhi had a chance to interact with several Uighurs and it quickly became clear they were not the \u201cterrorists\u201d or \u201cextremists\u201d Beijing had claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, information flowing in and out of Xinjiang remains tightly controlled, while Xinjiang residents are punished for having unauthorised contact with people outside China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe genocide is still happening but it is just much more covert now,\u201d Turdush said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the controversy surrounding the organised tours, both Turdush and Jazexhi believe that foreign journalists and officials should continue to visit Xinjiang as long as they challenge the narratives that are presented to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey should go,\u201d Jazexhi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd they should speak the truth about what they see in Xinjiang and what they don\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0e\u6b64\u540c\u65f6\uff0c\u8fdb\u51fa\u65b0\u7586\u7684\u4fe1\u606f\u4ecd\u7136\u53d7\u5230\u4e25\u683c\u63a7\u5236\uff0c\u800c\u65b0\u7586\u5c45\u6c11\u56e0\u672a\u7ecf\u6388\u6743\u4e0e\u4e2d\u56fd\u5883\u5916\u4eba\u5458\u63a5\u89e6\u800c\u53d7\u5230\u60e9\u7f5a\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5c3d\u7ba1\u56f4\u7ed5\u6709\u7ec4\u7ec7\u7684\u65c5\u884c\u5b58\u5728\u4e89\u8bae\uff0c\u4f46Turdush\u548cJazexhi\u90fd\u8ba4\u4e3a\uff0c\u5916\u56fd\u8bb0\u8005\u548c\u5b98\u5458\u5e94\u8be5\u7ee7\u7eed\u8bbf\u95ee\u65b0\u7586\uff0c\u53ea\u8981\u4ed6\u4eec\u6311\u6218\u5411\u4ed6\u4eec\u5c55\u793a\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
