Chinese wealth manager Zhongzhi Enterprise Group<\/a> has filed for bankruptcy liquidation after failing to repay debt, as the firm grapples with a deepening property market downturn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhongzhi applied for bankruptcy on the grounds it could not pay its due debts and its assets were insufficient to pay all its debts, a court in China\u2019s capital Beijing said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court said it accepted Zhongzhi\u2019s bankruptcy liquidation application in accordance with China\u2019s enterprise bankruptcy law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The worsening woes at Zhongzhi, a major player in China\u2019s $3 trillion shadow banking sector<\/a> \u2014 roughly the size of the French economy \u2014 add to worries that the country\u2019s property debt crisis is spilling over into the broader financial sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company, which has sizable exposure to China\u2019s real estate sector, apologized to its investors in a letter in November that said it was\u00a0heavily insolvent<\/a>\u00a0with up to $64 billion in liabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
